Following its immediate predecessors HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a response to the observation that the HTML and XHTML in common use on the World Wide Web are a mixture of features introduced by various specifications, along with those introduced by software products such as web browsers, those established by common practice, and the many syntax errors in existing web documents.[citation needed] It is also an attempt to define a single markup language that can be written in either HTML or XHTML syntax. It includes detailed processing models to encourage more interoperable implementations; it extends, improves and rationalises the markup available for documents, and introduces markup and application programming interfaces (APIs) for complex web applications.[3] For the same reasons, HTML5 is also a potential candidate for cross-platform mobile applications. Many features of HTML5 have been built with the consideration of being able to run on low-powered devices such as smartphones and tablets. In December 2011 research firm Strategy Analytics forecast sales of HTML5 compatible phones will top 1 billion in 2013.

The Bracelet Debate Update

ABC News looked into the controversy about whether the family of Sergeant Ryan David Jopek approved of Senator Obama wearing a bracelet with his name on it and whether they approved of him using his name publicly in the article Bracelet Wars. It appears there was some miscommunication between Jopek's parents who are divorced, but that his mother is happy with Senator Obama mentioning her son's name during the debate even though she had previously emailed the campaign and asked them not to talk about her son publicly. Her intent in giving Senator Obama the bracelet was so that he would know her son's name, which brings us back to the original problem. Senator Obama had to read Sergeant Jopek's name off his bracelet.

The ‘Please Do Something’ Congress

The remarkable side story to this year’s presidential election is how useless this Congress has become. Representative Dr. Michael Burgess of Texas estimates the actual days that the Congress will be in session before the November election is between 10-20 days. Senator Mitch McConnell is disturbed by the number of circuit court judge vacancies there are because Congress refuses to hold confirmation hearings. Dr. Burgess believes the only piece of legislation that may be addressed before this election is the Columbia Free Trade agreement, as the Dems don’t want to see the first possible piece of legislation to go before an Obama presidency to be a free trade agreement, as Senator Obama position on free trade has been muddled.

Differences in positions are part of the deal in Congress, but refusal to work or hold hearings is irresponsible. Speaker Pelosi has refused to hear the House energy bill, which has support with both conservatives and moderates as it takes a ‘do everything’ approach to help produce more energy, reducing gas and oil prices. As Dr. Burgess stated the Democratic leadership does not want to see any new laws passed that might make the Bush administration look good. Therefore, they stick the American people for their own political gain. Last session was known as the ‘Do nothing’ Congress, but as Dr. Burgess pointed out this has been the least effective Congress in recent history, and has taken on the moniker of the ‘Please do something’ Congress.

Clinton Campaign's Silence on 'Race Card' Deafening

The Politico article Race-card flap reopens Clinton camp wounds shows that the Clinton campaign basically agrees with the McCain campaign that Obama campaign used the 'race card' for political gain.

But regardless of the real meaning of Clinton’s words, and of Clinton’s long relationship with African-Americans, this is the rift between the Clinton and Obama camps that still cuts the deepest, and the one that may have the severest consequences for Obama’s White House bid. When John McCain’s campaign manager last week accused Obama of playing the “race card,” the Clintons or their supporters could have provided a powerful rebuttal. Instead they were silent, and in private, some even quietly cheered.

The depth of the anger in Clinton’s circle became clear Friday, when McCain’s chief strategist compared his candidate to Bill Clinton, and the Clintons seemed to accept the analogy.

"Say whatever you want about Bill Clinton, but it's deeply unfair to suggest his criticism of Obama was race-based,” McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told Politico, after his campaign blasted Obama for suggesting the McCain campaign would use his race against him. “We knew it was coming in our direction because they did it against a president of the United States of their own party.”

Hillary Clinton’s staff declined to comment, but her campaign communications director, Howard Wolfson, appeared on Fox News later that day to, in effect, back Schmidt up.

Some have stated that the Obama campaign shouldn't be criticized for bringing up race. However, it's important to note that the Obama campaign didn't just make a blanket statement about race and ethnicity, Obama directly stated that the McCain campaign would be using his "funny name" and the way he looks against him. What is unfair is to point your finger at the McCain campaign for trying to scare people with race and ethnicity when there is no evidence of that happenning.

The Clinton camp's silence speaks volumes. If they disagreed with the McCain campaign's assessment they could have easily knocked down the 'race card' charges, or at least minimized them with a simple statement. That didn't happen, and the reason is that they've already been burned by this strategy.

Obama Snubs Troops

The Wall Street Journal Reports...

The Obama camp said they canceled the event after the Pentagon ruled it was a campaign event, and needed to be funded from the senator’s election kitty.

“Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go,” Obama advisor, retired Gen. Scott Gration, said in a statement.

How about visiting the troops without the media tagging along, then it wouldn't look like a campaign event. Senator Obama is spending $5 on advertising during the Olympics, but won't visit wounded soldiers on his campaign's dime? Apparently, it's more important for him to have the media take pictures of him at the Ritz Carlton gym lifting weights, than to take a moment leave the press behind and talk to the people who defend this country.

Obama Campaign: Old School Politics or Ignorance?

Susan Rice's false statement about the Kennedy Khruschchev meeting leaves open two questions. Are Obama foreign policy advisors up to snuff to guide a candidate and potential president? Are Obama advisors making misleading or false statements in order to win votes? First, Dr. Susan Rice is a Rhodes Scholar, a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institute, and has worked on the Kerry and Dukakis campaigns. It seems hard to believe that she would have thought that the Kennedy Khruschchev meeting really resolved the Cuban Missile Crisis. If she did, it is a troubling gap in knowledge for such an accomplished international relations scholar.

Consequently, that raises the second question of whether this is a tactic to sway votes by misleading people. Was Susan Rice trying to cash in on the popularity of JFK by assuming most people would not know their history well enough to challenge her? This isn't Rice's first misstatement. She has been trying over the last few months to walk back Senator Obama's statement that he would meet with dictators of rouge nations in the first year of his presidency without preconditions. The tactic being to confuse people with a debate between 'precondition' and 'preparations'. Yet, Dr. Rice expressly stated, “Nobody said he would initiate contacts at the presidential level; that requires due preparation and advance work.” That is false, Senator Obama in a YouTube debate expressly stated he would meet with the leaders of Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela without preconditions, which drew criticism from people on both sides of the isle. This begs the question is this a bumbling foreign policy, or old school politics. A decission to say anything regardless of its veracity to put your candidate in office.

Poor Michigan

Watching Senator Levin today talk about how all the problems the Democrats are having with counting delegates is New Hampshire's fault, makes me want to crack out my violin. Republicans don't seem to be having these problems; is New Hampshire just out to get MI Democrats?

I understand that many see NH's first in the nation status as unfair, there is an element to truth to that. However, NH and its citizens take their role seriously. New Hampshirites go to see numerous candidates and question them about their positions. NH isn't first because it's the status quo, their first because they fight for it. It isn't as some suggest a simple desire for the revenue that it brings in or the attention that the state garners. Trust me you haven't met many New Englanders if you think that this is just attention seeking behavior. I do wish the town hall forums that NH features could be seen by more than just the few people in the first voting states. However, this is a unique process that is one of the few things in politics not influenced by money and power. New Hampshirites vote for the candidates who answer their questions. We aren't following the money race, or the pundit's critiques we're choosing a candidate based on direct contact and substantive issue. While the Democrats may not appreciate this, New Hampshirites do and will not sit back and accept a denegration of the system that they contribute to in such a unique way.

Just like the national press called Senator McCain's race over last summer, they are now calling NH blue. Well, the race was surely not over, the voters are supporting our campaign, and you are the leadership that is going to insure a McCain general election victory in NH in November. For many of you who remember the incredibly small margin and the difference that our very few electoral votes in NH made in the 2000 election; we're here again.

We have heard from so many people who have had withdrawals since the January 8th Primary ended, and are ready to get going on the general election. Well, now it’s time to build an even stronger organization than we had for the Primary. Even though NH went for Kerry in 2004, it will be a "battleground" state in 2008 and we need to get organized now to ensure a McCain Victory in November. We need your presence for a general election organization meeting for John's campaign where we can map the course going forward and determine where we need our resources (people, time and money).

Please plan to attend Saturday, April 12th , at 1:00 pm in Manchester at the McCain headquarters. The McCain County Chairs and Coalition Chairs should arrive an hour earlier.

McCain's Success in New Hampshire

Senator McCain has been experiencing a swell on good press and good will in New Hampshire. He received the Union Leader endorsement, he made an appearance with Red Sox star Curt Shilling, and he has done well in several debates that show him as the grown up and the thinker in the room. As a volunteer, I along with others have noticed that each week the tone of the phone calls we make improves. While undecideds are still a clear majority there are more and more who are leaning towards or supporting Senator McCain. Each event and town hall he wins more people over to his side. He has a good rapport with his audience, and can talk at length on a variety of subjects showing his experience and depth of knowledge. He frequently states at town halls that ‘you may not agree with me on all the issues, but you will know where I stand’. He draws a wide range of supporters because of this. He sticks to his guns even when it’s not politically advantageous and wins people over not because they agree with him completely, but because they respect that he has the backbone to stand up for what he believes in.

The survivor?
We can’t believe we’re saying this, but the idea of McCain as last man standing in the GOP field is suddenly not so crazy. The thinking behind this is: 1) Huckabee wins Iowa, but there is no way the Republican Party hands the nomination to Huckabee; 2) Rudy’s next three weeks are as brutal as last week; and 3) Thompson doesn’t catch fire. If those three things happen, then McCain becomes a stronger possibility, right? In fact, does anyone else see the parallels between this year's BCS and the GOP race? No one seems to want to be No.1. But, eventually, someone has to play for the title -- er -- nomination. Before this year, no two-loss team had been in the national title game. If there is any candidate that looks like a two-loss team, it's McCain.

The official New Hampshire Primary date has been set. It will be January 8, 2008. One week before the Michigan Primary and five days after the Iowa Caucus.
