MANCHESTER, NH -- The McCain-Palin campaign today announced that New Hampshire State Representative Doreen Howard, a Democratic legislator from Newmarket, has endorsed John McCain for president. Representative Howard previously supported Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's candidacy.

"As a lifelong Democrat who enthusiastically backed Hillary Clinton in the primaries, I am now supporting John McCain. Like Senator Clinton, McCain values the importance of public service. Both Clinton and McCain put country first and that's critically important," said Howard. "John McCain and Sarah Palin are mavericks who have proven they can deliver real reform. As our nation faces challenges at home and abroad, Americans will benefit from their experience, judgment and strong leadership."

Elected in 2006, Representative Howard is a member of the State-Federal Relations and Veterans Affairs Committee. She represents Newmarket and Newfields.
Representative Howard supported John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000.

Humor as a Remedy for Hubris

Senator McCain's sense of humor has been both an asset and a liability over the years. It is certainly part of his basic appeal, and it is one of the reasons he relates so well at town hall meetings as his humor creates an immediate connection with the audience. His detractors will note that some of his jokes have been inapprporiate, and in some cases that's true, hence his humor as liability. It can also cause problems because in print, jokes often don't come across the way they do in person. For instance, during the primaries Senator McCain jokingly called a student who asked him a somewhat inappropriate question 'a little jerk' (clip below). There was quite a buzz in the papers until people actually saw the clip, and it was quite evident that he was joking.

So now comes the humorous and sarcastic McCain ad The One. In this case humor turns out to be the perfect remedy for an over-inflated ego. It's hard not see lines like, "We are the ones we've been waiting for" or "a light will shine down from somewhere" as flat out funny. To add to this Obama's reaction is priceless. His stern condemnation of the ads 'juvenile' just shows his inability to laugh at himself. You know that if you make a joke at Senator McCain's expense he'll likely be the first one to laugh (as he has done numerous times when teased about his age). On the other hand, Senator Obama blew it by taking this joke and himself so seriously.

Republican John McCain's campaign on Saturday sharply criticized Democratic rival Barack Obama for canceling a visit to wounded troops in Germany, contending Obama chose foreign leaders and cheering Europeans over "injured American heroes."

Obama's campaign called the accusation "wildly inappropriate." His spokesman has claimed that the visit to a military hospital in Germany was scrapped after the Pentagon raised concerns about political activity on a military base. Earlier, though, the campaign had said Obama decided the visit might be seen as inappropriate politicking. However, the Pentagon said the senator was never told not to visit.

"Senator McCain knows full well that Senator Obama strongly supports and honors our troops, which is what makes this attack so disingenuous. This politicization of our soldiers is exactly what Senator Obama sought to avoid," Vietor said.

Obama was flying from London to Chicago on Saturday when the McCain campaign issued a statement from Joe Repya, a retired Army colonel who said Obama had broken a commitment to visit the wounded Americans.

"Several explanations were offered, none was convincing and each was at odds with the statements of American military leaders," Repya said. "For a young man so apt at playing president, Barack Obama badly misjudged the important demands of the office he seeks."

If Senator Obama sought to avoid 'politicization' of his scheduled meeting with the troops, why not ditch the cameras and campaign staff and go visit the injured soldiers quietly under the radar? Apparently it is 'wildly inappropriate' and 'disingenuous' for Senator McCain to confront Senator Obama with facts. The facts remain, as they have from the begining, the Pentagon never told Senator Obama he couldn't visit the hospital simply that he could not campaign there. The facts are that Obama first said he didn't go because he thought it was 'inappropriate' to visit the troops on his campaign's dime. Then he blamed it on the Pentagon. So Senator Obama and his campaign can be express outrage at the McCain campaign if they'd like, but McCain isn't the one snubbed wounded American soldiers.

Obama Advisor Susan Rice's Major Historical/Foreign Policy Error

Unfortunately, Susan Rice's statement regarding the Kennedy Khrushchev meeting, "Thank God he did because if he hadn't we would have not been able to resolve the Cuban Missile Crisis" is completely false. In fact historians agree that this meeting fueled the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The Weekly Standand, in detailing the Kennedy Khrushchev meeting, quotes NYT columnist James Reston who interviewed President Kennedy right after his meeting with Khrushchev,

"Reston reported that Kennedy said just enough for Reston to conclude that Khrushchev "had studied the events of the Bay of Pigs" and that he had "decided that he was dealing with an inexperienced young leader who could be intimidated and blackmailed." Kennedy said to Reston that Khrushchev had "just beat [the] hell out of me" and that he had presented Kennedy with a terrible problem: "If he thinks I'm inexperienced and have no guts, until we remove those ideas we won't get anywhere with him. So we have to act."

Kennedy responded to the meeting with a congressional request for a dramatic increase in defense spending, and a significant increase in the size of the military. Khrushchev responded to Kennedy's actions with above ground nuclear testing and erecting the Berlin Wall. The tensions between the US and Soviet Union dramatically increased due to the Kennedy Khrushchev meeting; the Cuban Missile Crisis followed.

Susan Rice's statement is simply false. There is no historical record of the Kennedy Khrushchev meeting being at all helpful in resolving the Cuban Missile Crisis and actually the exact opposite true that an inexperienced leader was bullied into an arms race.

WaPo Hit Piece Refutiated

The Washington Post printed an article that definitively misrepresented Senator McCain's stance on Hamas stating that he had previously supported negotiating with Hamas without conditions. This is false, and there are numerous sources showing that a quote taken out of context was used to misrepresent his position.

Hot Air explains how it happened...

The context here is crystal clear. McCain envisioned a possible change in Hamas from a terrorist group to a legitimate political party, one that recognized Israel and renounced violence. Under those conditions, McCain said that we could engage them in talks designed to establish peace, and only under those conditions. The Bush administration had the same policy at the time. Neither the US nor John McCain supported meeting with Hamas without preconditions, and they certainly didn’t have policy advisers meeting with them while they conducted terrorist attacks and plotted an armed takeover of Gaza.

The Lil McCainiacs

I took my children on the 'campaign trail' this weekend for the first time. My lil girl was so excited at the opportunity to meet Senator McCain it was crazy. Who ever would've thought a four year old and nine year old would have enough respect and knowledge to appreciate this meeting.

We arrived in Barrington about 20 minutes early...it was too cold for them to wait outside so we slumped into Calefs store. They knew to keep an eye out for *(the big McCain Hero bus)* and when it finally pulled in they were practically dancing. In walks John, he is immediately bombarded with people. People clambering past and in front of us trying to get to John. We simply waited in the wings as I knew he would make it a point to stop by , I could tell from the wink across the room when we made eye contact. My daughter MaKayla, grabbing peoples around about the knees, asking them politely to please move, *John McCain is coming to see me!* Finally he made his way over. We talked a bit, then he generously posed for pictures with the kids and had a wee chat with them. My daughter reached for his pant leg as he made his way off , exclaiming *I wasn't done talking to him people*

Well, I finally managed to get her back and we made our way to the door. At this point I had planned on taking them home before I returned to the campaign. When we got to the front steps my daughter asked what we were doing and I explained. She immediately broke into tears...very dramatic and genuine * But Daddy, Daddy Daddy . . . I didn't get to thank him for being a Hero!*...well, after that I had no choice but to wait for the Senator to come back out. So we went outside and waited by the bus. John's Mom was the first out and she spent a solid ten minutes chatting with the kids and myself she was absolutely fantastic! John began to make his way down the stairs . . . My daughter MaKayla was the FIRST one in front of him standing there all by herself. John Said * Hey its you again sweety.,* He knelt down and asked if she would give him a hug and kiss Goodbye...She Obliged excitedly!! It made her whole weekend!&nb sp; As John began to rise. MaKayla exclaimed * WAIT WAIT JOHN MCCAIN! I forgot to tell you something!...He knelt down again and she said *Thank you for being such a good hero!*....McCain Smiled very very widely and of course the media and cameras went berserk! It was wonderful. We got home in time for the kids to see themselves on the News with John McCain!!!!

What a weekend for the lil' McCainiacs!!
